CSE Preliminary Exam Strategy

UPSC conduct Civil services exam annually to recruit officers for IAS, IPS, IRS, IFS, Railway Account services etc. there is not single strategy to crack this exam. It has three stage i.e. Preliminary exam, Mains and finally personality test (and not interview 😊 ).  Beauty of this exam is that although there is a defined syllabus at least for first two stages, but practically it covers everything about this great civilization sub-continent size. Here I will try to share my experience of successful journey of CSE preparation. 

Preliminary Test

I have picked the topics from syllabus only. I will give study material to be referred for each topic. since everythinf covered in PT is also part of mains exams keep that in mind.


  • Current events of national and international importance.
    • one news paper preferably India Express. dont invest more than 1 hour daily on this.
    • Yojana and Kurukshetra > only selected articles
    • Monthly magazine by reputed coaching Institute e.g. Vision IAS
  • History of India and Indian National Movement.
    • Spectrum Modern India > read it at least thrice
  • Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
    • NCERT Class 11th : Fundamental of Physical Geography
    • NCERT Class 11th : Indian Physical Environment
    • NCERT Class 12th : Fundamentals of Human Geography
    • NCERT Class 12th : India People and Economy
  • Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
    • Indian Polity by M Laxmikant  > Pick the latest version
  • Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
    • Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh > Pick the latest version
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change
    • Shankar IAS Environment > Pick the latest version
  • General Science
    • class 6th to class 10th NCERT Science books
